Autologous Fat

Autologous fat is the surgical transfer of your own fat from one area of the body
(usually the abdomen) to another (face, lips).  The degree of success and duration of
permanency of the fat transfer varies depending on the technique used by the
physician, and patient specific factors.  The objective of the facial enhancement
procedure is produce a high rate of fat graft uptake.

From the aesthetic surgeon perspective, the difficulty lies in the harvesting,
processing and grafting techniques.  These are tenable factors that can be overcome
with experience.

Patient specific factors beyond the aesthetic surgeons control include patient smoking
habits and anticoagulation (both exert a negative effect on fat graft survival).

In today's market, autologous fat grafting is declining due to advanced "off the shelf"
injectables such as the hyaluronic acids.  These new injectables do not require
surgical fat harvesting and fat grafting and can be performed in minutes with little
downtime.
